When Montalvo Moves Indoors: Saratoga's Late-Fall Season at the Villa

Sunlit sitting room with terracotta floors, dark wood French doors, a linen sofa and a limestone fireplace overlooking a stone terrace and mature oak.

Montalvo's 2026 outdoor exhibition closes on Sunday, November 8. From then until the new year, almost everything on the arts center's calendar happens under a roof, either in the historic Villa or in the Carriage House Theatre. The grounds stay free and open from 8 a.m. to sunset every day. The places people go for an evening out are now the indoor rooms, the volunteer-run holiday market and a roving staging of a Dickens classic.

This turn indoors has been coming for a while. In April 2025, the Saratoga Falcon reported that the outdoor Lilian Fontaine Garden Theatre can seat up to 1,400 people, but its use had been "limited and declining in recent years due to high costs." The same piece described the Carriage House as a lively indoor venue with a performing arts series that has run for more than 60 years. That report is a year and a half old. The 2026 to 2027 calendar still follows the pattern it described.

Four Weekends Left for the Art on the Grounds

The Art and Architecture of Maybe, Montalvo's 2026 Marcus Exhibition, has been on view since June 26. Seven works are installed outdoors and can be seen from 8 a.m. to sunset. Four more installations are inside the Cottage Gallery, next to Parking Lot 2. The gallery opens Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., or by appointment. From today, October 12, that leaves four Thursday-to-Sunday stretches before the exhibition closes on November 8.

The anchor piece is Lead Pencil Studio's Double Vision: Doorway, a 12-foot sculpture made of welded stainless-steel rods, placed in the Italianate Garden below the Villa. Lead Pencil Studio is a Seattle collective led by Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo, and Montalvo names the studio as a 2019 Lucas Artists Program Fellow. The piece won this year's Marcus Commissioning Prize, a $40,000 award that Montalvo's Lucas Artists Program has given each year since a 2023 leadership gift from the George and Judy Marcus Family Foundation.

The other outdoor works include:

  • Edra Soto's rooms built from screens that refer to Puerto Rican vernacular architecture
  • Viviana Paredes' glass house made from repurposed tequila bottles
  • Taro Hattori's wooden teahouse and endai benches
  • A winged dress tent and a newly planted native garden by Robin Lasser, Adrienne Pao and Sasha Vermel
  • Cameron Hockenson's site-specific bird houses

Inside the Cottage Gallery are Rebeca Méndez's immersive video, architectural models by Terry Berlier and Lee Mingwei, Tony May's follies, and a project Andre Woodward built with children from this summer's fort-making camp. Most of the outdoor pieces are structures you can walk into, which makes them better seen in daylight. With sunset getting earlier each week, the time left for the exhibition is shorter than the calendar suggests.

November 1, the Last Big Day on the Lawn

One event marks the change of season. The free 4th Lowrider Art Showcase runs Sunday, November 1, from 1 to 5 p.m. and is billed as a Día de los Muertos celebration. It is presented with United Lowrider Council of San Jose and Local Color SJ. Montalvo's listing describes lowriders on the lawn, art-making, access to the gardens and trails, local artists and vendors, DJs and dancing, and food vendors. Angel Romero's 1965 Chevrolet Impala, "Saturday Love," is named on the program, and Churros El Güero is listed among the vendors.

The date has moved later each year. The Los Gatan covered the second edition on September 22, 2024. Montalvo held the third on October 5, 2025. Tying the 2026 event to Día de los Muertos puts the year's last large outdoor gathering one week before the Marcus Exhibition closes.

Families get a smaller outdoor date a week earlier. Goblins in the Garden, Montalvo's Halloween event for families, starts at 11 a.m. on Sunday, October 25, and registration is through the events calendar.

The Carriage House Carries the Season

Once the lawn programming ends, the Claire Loftus Carriage House Theatre becomes the main stage. Montalvo calls it an intimate, acoustically balanced indoor room. Here is the late-fall and early-winter run on the 2026 to 2027 calendar:

The October and November shows on the calendar start at 7:30 p.m. The St. Paul show is that group's second visit to the Carriage House. The band is made up of Prince alumni, with members of The Revolution, The New Power Generation, The Time and The Family.

Parking works differently than it does for the big summer shows. All Carriage House parking is on site and requires a permit, which you can buy with your tickets or at the gate. Montalvo says there is no West Valley College parking or shuttle for these indoor performances. Rideshare drop-offs are allowed if you tell the gate attendant.

The Villa in November Belongs to the Volunteers

The Villa's November is run largely by the Montalvo Service Group, the center's auxiliary, which has supported Montalvo since 1954. Its fundraising and volunteer work go toward Montalvo's upkeep and education programs.

The group's main fall event is the free Yuletide Boutique, held in the Villa on Friday through Sunday, November 20 to 22. Sunday includes a clearance vintage sale. The vendor list includes Anita Clemetson Pottery, Glasswork by Janett and Roxanne's Biscotti, along with painted silks, soaps, honey and other local artisan goods. One line on the page calls Saturday November 22, but the detailed hours list Saturday as the 21st and Sunday as the 22nd. The market has a long history at Montalvo. A Mercury News entertainment calendar listed a Yuletide Marketplace at Montalvo as early as 2007.

Yuletide Tea is served on Sunday, November 22, with seatings at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $70 plus a $5 service fee.

The holiday workshops are filling faster than the market. Montalvo lists Super-Secret Holiday Gift-Making Workshops for children and Wild-Foraged Wreath-Making Workshops on November 15 and December 2. The youth workshop runs two hours for ages 5 to 10. Children make two handmade gifts, all materials are included, and there is hot cocoa. When the calendar was captured, one November 15 wreath session showed limited availability, the other was sold out, and December 2 was waitlist only.

December Turns the Villa Into a Stage

In December the Villa becomes a theater set. Silicon Valley Shakespeare's A Christmas Carol runs December 4 to 20 as a roving production that moves through the Villa and courtyard, with a female- and nonbinary-led cast and a benefit performance on December 12. Some of the individual performance dates on the listing contradict each other, so confirm a specific night with the company before you book.

The production opens the night after the Carpenters tribute on December 3, and it overlaps with the rest of the Carriage House's holiday run, from Charo on December 5 to David Benoit's Charlie Brown program on December 11. On the busiest December evenings, Montalvo will have audiences in two indoor venues at once and almost no programming on the lawn.

The Hillside Runs on Its Own Rules

The trails explain why the grounds can feel so different from one week to the next. Montalvo is private property owned by the Montalvo Association, a nonprofit. The Association leases the trails in the hills behind the Villa to the County of Santa Clara, which runs them as a public park. The lease does not cover the Great Lawn, the Italianate Garden, the Oval Garden or Charmaine's Garden Terrace. Montalvo can close any of those areas, or its parking lots, for its own programs or for private events. Its visitor page notes that access to the grounds and lots may be limited on Friday through Sunday evenings from May to October. That window ends this month.

Santa Clara County Parks maintains the hillside routes. The County's 2026 guide map labels the Lookout, Redwood, Nature and Orchard trails and warns that they may close for poor conditions or environmental concerns. As of the County's October 6 update, its closures page showed no closures at Villa Montalvo. For live status, call the trail hotline at 408-355-2200 and press 3. The County's trails and the Association's gardens close for different reasons and on different schedules. Through the holidays, an event in the Villa can close a garden without affecting the trails, and a muddy trail can close without affecting the gardens.

Montalvo sits on private land that its nonprofit owners have kept open to the public, and the property's design matters to anyone who values that kind of stewardship. Through Stilla Raissi, we advise Saratoga owners whose properties have that same mix of formal gardens, hillside and history.
