Every September, the same three flyers reach every mailbox in town: Taste of Los Gatos, the Art & Wine Festival, and whichever Oktoberfest is on the Civic Center lawn that year. The events themselves have not changed much. What changed this year is the sidewalk they sit on.

On February 17, 2026, the Town Council quietly adopted an ordinance that reshapes how downtown functions during exactly these weekends. If you live here, the practical effect is small and specific, and it is worth understanding before you plan the next six weekends.

The Ordinance That Changed The Sidewalks

Ordinance 2382 established an Entertainment Zone inside the C-2 Downtown Zone. In plain terms, once the Town approves a special event within the activated zone, businesses with the proper ABC clearance may sell an alcoholic beverage that a patron can then carry outside the licensed premise, so long as they remain within the designated public area. The Town Council adopted the ordinance to allow the establishment of an Entertainment Zone within the C-2 Downtown Zone; activation requires approval through the Town's Special Event Permit process, and businesses register through the ABC's Entertainment Zones portal using their license number and the Los Gatos ordinance number, 2382.

The rule is narrower than most residents assume. It does not turn Santa Cruz Avenue into Bourbon Street. It creates a legal envelope, on specific dates, inside a specific footprint, that lets a glass of Loma Brewing or Testarossa leave a doorway and cross to a bench without a paper bag. Every autumn event below now operates against that backdrop.

The Fall Weekends, Translated

Here is what actually happens between mid-September and the end of October, and where the new ordinance shows up.

Taste of Los Gatos is the event most changed by the ordinance. The Tasting Wristband is a passport to signature bites from 27+ participating downtown restaurants, and two Los Gatos restaurants will receive the 2026 Golden Spoon Distinction for culinary excellence and longstanding commitment to the festival. Practical detail that matters: Tasting Wristbands have sold out before festival day in past years, so residents who show up at noon expecting walk-up availability tend to be disappointed. Live music is anchored by The Freshmakers on the Main Stage at Bean Avenue and Daze on the Green at North Santa Cruz Avenue and Main Street. The Craft Beer Tap Truck sits in front of U.S. Bank at 127 N. Santa Cruz Avenue from noon to 4:30 PM, pouring Loma Brewing and Hapa's, with beer ticket sales ending at 4:00 PM and all beer tickets redeemed by 4:30 PM per ABC regulations.

The Art & Wine Festival the following weekend is a different animal. Held on the Civic Center lawn at 110 E. Main Street, the festival features a Makers Market with more than 200 regional artisans, live music, wine from local vintners, craft beer, and gourmet food trucks, running September 26 and 27, 2026, from 10 AM to 6:30 PM. It is a benefit event, not a bar event. Proceeds support Kiwanis Club community programs, including scholarships for at-risk high schoolers, leadership clubs, pediatric trauma prevention, and special-needs youth activities. The Entertainment Zone rules apply if the Town has permitted them for the footprint, but the character of the event, families and easels and a slow shuffle past booths, does not change.

College Avenue Keeps Its Own Clock

While downtown is running its festival season, the other half of the Los Gatos autumn calendar is playing out a mile away, on College Avenue, at a pace set by grape sugar rather than event permits.

The 2026 harvest for Testarossa began with the first pick from Brosseau Vineyard in Chalone, with Brosseau Chardonnay having the distinction of being first into the press. Winemaker Bill Brosseau has run the cellar since 2000, and the property he runs it in has a longer institutional memory than almost any building in town. The winery moved into the historic Sacred Heart Novitiate facility in 1997 and expanded to the full winemaking facility in 2003; the production of altar wine during Prohibition means the Novitiate is the fourth-oldest continuously operating winery in California.

On October 9, Testarossa staff, supporters, and Novitiate alumni gathered around a bin of La Rinconada pinot noir clusters for the 137th Blessing of the Grapes at the historic Novitiate property in Los Gatos, the brand that has made its home there for well over two decades. This is the oldest continuously observed autumn event in the town, older than the Civic Center itself, and it happens on a Thursday morning most Angeleno tourists never see.

The public counterpart is the Harvest Dinner at 107 Bistro & Wine Bar, inside the tasting room. The five-course dinner is billed as the winery's premier wine and food event of the year, served indoors on kings tables with a menu prepared by Executive Chef Nadiv Geiger. Reading GOLD Thursday Like A Resident
